Why We Limit Screen Time in Elementary School

I love using technology in the classroom. The internet opens doors to endless learning—it lets students research topics in depth, explore new ideas, and access information that might take years to find in books. Technology can also be a quick and efficient way to assess student learning and growth.

At the same time, I’ve seen how easy it is for screens to take over. Many classrooms rely on devices for hours each day, and some learning tools focus more on gamification than meaningful learning. School should be fun, but studies show that too much screen time can hurt attention, focus, and deep thinking.

At Provo Mountain Academy, we use technology intentionally. Computers act like digital books and research tools rather than just entertainment. Students access resources, gather information, and present their findings—but only when it enhances learning, not as a default part of every lesson. Limiting screen time helps children stay focused, engaged, and confident in their thinking.

A Personal Perspective

In my experience, striking the right balance is key. Technology is a powerful tool, but it works best when it has a purpose. I encourage students to think critically, use research effectively, and apply what they’ve learned—not just click through games or quizzes. When screens are used thoughtfully, students gain the benefits of technology without losing focus, curiosity, or the joy of learning hands-on.
