The 5E Model of Teaching: Learning Through Exploration and Experience
The 5E Model of Teaching is most often associated with science instruction—and for good reason. It’s designed to help students learn by exploring, questioning, and making sense of ideas through experience.
But over the years, I’ve found that the 5E model works just as well in social studies and other subjects. At its core, it’s simply a thoughtful way to structure learning so students stay engaged and understanding builds naturally.
What Is the 5E Model?
The 5E model is built around five phases of learning:
Engage – Spark interest and curiosity
Explore – Let students investigate and experience the idea
Explain – Introduce vocabulary and formal understanding
Elaborate – Extend and apply learning in new ways
Evaluate – Reflect on understanding and growth
Each phase builds on the one before it, creating a clear and purposeful learning progression.
Why It Works So Well in Science
In science, the 5E model feels intuitive.
Students might start with a puzzling phenomenon, explore it through hands-on investigation, and then learn the scientific explanation behind what they observed. Because students have already experienced the concept, the explanation makes more sense and sticks longer.
Learning feels active rather than abstract.
Why I Use It in Social Studies Too
Social studies benefits from the same approach.
Rather than beginning with dates and definitions, the 5E model allows students to first engage with a story, image, question, or problem from history. Students can explore primary sources, maps, or scenarios before formal instruction.
When students later learn the historical context or vocabulary, they already have a mental framework to connect it to.
This makes history feel less like memorization and more like discovery.
Building Curiosity Before Content
One of the biggest strengths of the 5E model is how it builds curiosity before content.
Students become interested because they’ve encountered a question or experience that doesn’t yet have a clear answer. That curiosity motivates them to pay attention during the explanation phase instead of passively receiving information.
They want to understand.
Supporting Different Learners
The 5E model naturally supports a wide range of learners.
Hands-on learners benefit from the explore phase. Verbal learners thrive during discussion and explanation. Reflective learners gain insight during evaluation.
Because learning happens in multiple ways, more students find entry points into the content.
Learning That Builds Over Time
Another reason I value the 5E model is that it emphasizes learning as a process.
Students don’t just learn something once and move on. They revisit ideas, refine their thinking, and apply concepts in new situations. This leads to deeper understanding and better retention.
