Teaching Creativity on Purpose: How the SCAMPER Model Helps Students Think Differently
Creativity is often treated as something that just happens.
Some students are labeled creative, others aren’t—and schools often assume creativity will emerge on its own if students are given enough freedom. In reality, creativity is a thinking skill, and like any skill, it can be taught, practiced, and strengthened.
One of my favorite tools for doing this is the SCAMPER model.
What Is SCAMPER?
SCAMPER is a structured, mnemonic-based brainstorming technique designed to help students generate new ideas by changing or rethinking something that already exists.
SCAMPER guides students through seven different ways of thinking:
Substitute – What could be replaced?
Combine – What ideas or parts could be merged?
Adapt – What could be adjusted or borrowed from something else?
Modify – What could be changed, enlarged, or reduced?
Put to another use – How else could this be used?
Eliminate – What could be removed or simplified?
Rearrange / Reverse – What happens if the order or direction changes?
Rather than asking students to “be creative,” SCAMPER gives them a clear process for thinking creatively.
Why Structure Helps Creativity
There’s a common misconception that creativity only thrives in unstructured environments. In my experience, the opposite is often true—especially for students.
When students are given a framework like SCAMPER, they’re not staring at a blank page wondering where to start. Instead, they have specific prompts that push their thinking in new directions.
Structure lowers anxiety and increases participation.
Students who don’t usually see themselves as “creative” suddenly realize they can generate ideas when they’re shown how.
How SCAMPER Works in the Classroom
SCAMPER can be used across subjects and grade levels.
Students might:
Redesign a familiar object
Rethink a historical event from a different angle
Improve a solution to a real-world problem
Modify a story, invention, or system
Reimagine how something could work in a new context
Because the prompts are clear, students stay focused while still thinking flexibly. Discussions become richer, and students build on one another’s ideas.
Creativity Is a Skill, Not a Trait
One of the things I love most about SCAMPER is that it teaches students how to think, not what to think.
Students learn that creativity isn’t about having the best idea right away. It’s about:
Exploring possibilities
Trying variations
Asking “what if?”
Revising and improving ideas
Over time, students become more comfortable experimenting and less afraid of being wrong.
Supporting All Learners
SCAMPER is especially effective because it supports a wide range of learners.
Some students jump right into brainstorming. Others need the prompts to get started. SCAMPER meets both needs.
Because every student responds to the same set of prompts, participation increases and ideas become more diverse. Students learn that there’s more than one “right” way to approach a problem.
Creativity With Intention

And that’s a skill they’ll use long after they leave the classroom.
