Montessori-Inspired, But Not Montessori: Our Thoughtful Approach to Learning
I’ve always admired the Montessori approach to education.
There is a lot to appreciate in the way Montessori classrooms are designed to honor children as capable, curious learners. The emphasis on independence, hands-on materials, and respect for child development aligns closely with what we believe matters most in education.
That said, Provo Mountain Academy is not a Montessori school, and we are not Montessori-certified. That distinction is important—not because we reject Montessori principles, but because we believe no single approach works best for every child.
What We Admire About Montessori
There are several aspects of Montessori education that I deeply respect.
Self-directed learning encourages students to take ownership of their work and follow their curiosity.
Freedom within limits allows children to make choices while still learning responsibility and self-regulation.
Multi-age classrooms create opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and leadership among students.
These ideas are powerful, and we intentionally incorporate many Montessori-inspired practices into our classrooms.
Why One Approach Isn’t Enough
As much as I admire Montessori, I also know that it doesn’t work equally well for every child.
Some children thrive in highly self-directed environments. They are naturally motivated, organized, and eager to explore independently. Montessori can be an excellent fit for those students.
Other children, however, need more structure, routine, and direct guidance—especially in foundational areas like reading and math. Without that structure, they may feel overwhelmed, lost, or frustrated rather than empowered.
Neither type of learner is better or worse. They are simply different.
Scott’s Early Experience With Montessori
Before becoming a classroom teacher, Scott’s first job during his undergraduate years was at a Montessori school, where he worked as a PE teacher and reading coach. That experience gave him firsthand exposure to Montessori classrooms long before we ever talked about starting a school.
He saw the strengths of the approach up close—the independence, hands-on learning, and respect for child development. He also saw that while some students thrived in that environment, others struggled without more structure, routine, and direct instruction.
That early experience shaped how we think about education today. It reinforced the idea that no single philosophy works best for every child. What matters most is understanding students as individuals and being willing to adapt instruction to meet their needs.
Our Blended, Student-Centered Approach
At Provo Mountain Academy, we believe the best education isn’t tied to one philosophy—it’s responsive to the child in front of us.
We draw from the strengths of multiple educational approaches, including Montessori-inspired practices, explicit instruction, project-based learning, and performance-based assessment. This allows us to support a wide range of learners while staying grounded in what works.
Because we are small by design, we can tailor instruction, structure, and support to meet students where they are. We aren’t locked into a single model. We can adjust as students grow and their needs change.
Structure and Independence Can Coexist
One misconception in education is that schools must choose between structure and independence. We don’t believe that.
Children can learn responsibility and independence within a structured, predictable environment. In fact, many students need that structure in order to feel safe enough to take risks and explore.
Our goal is to strike that balance—offering choice and autonomy while providing the routines, guidance, and direct instruction many students need to succeed.
A School Designed for Many Learners
Provo Mountain Academy is built for families who value thoughtful, intentional education over labels.
We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all schooling. We believe in knowing students well, understanding how they learn best, and adapting accordingly.
By blending the best ideas from different educational approaches—and staying flexible as a small school—we create an environment where many types of learners can thrive.
